As I suspected, the US is part of the global South. If the map had been of mandatory paid parental leave, only the US and 4 other countries (of 173 surveyed) would be shown to be without it. (The others are Lesotho, Papua New Guinea, Liberia and Swaziland, according to Parade magazine's July 19th issue.)
